Gaza: Hamas on Saturday released six more Israeli hostages, bringing a glimmer of hope to the fragile Gaza ceasefire deal. The released hostages were handed over to the Red Cross and then reunited with their families. They underwent preliminary medical examinations and were taken to various hospitals for further treatment. Reports suggested that the latest release includes the names of Eliya Cohen (27), Omer Shem Tov (22), and Omer Wenkert (23), who were kidnapped by Hamas. The hostages were kidnapped from the site of the Nova music festival in southern Israel during the Hamas's brutal attack on October 7 in 2023.

According to the reports, the three hostages were handed over to the Red Cross and transported to Israeli forces from central Gaza's Nuseirat. In a poignant moment, the hostages were seen posing alongside Hamas fighters in fake army uniforms on stage in Nuseirat. Omer Shem Tov was even seen kissing two Hamas terrorists on the head and blowing kisses to the crowd.

In addition to the three hostages, Tal Shoham (40), and Avera Mengistu (39), who were held by Hamas for around a decade after entering Gaza on their own, were also released by the group in southern Gaza's Rafah. A sixth hostage Hisham Al-Sayed (36_ was freed by Hamas in Gaza City.

The release of the six hostages is part of the Gaza ceasefire deal, which has paused the 16-month war between Israel and Hamas. The deal has been fragile, with heightened tensions casting a cloud over its future.

The Gaza war began in 2023, when Hamas launched an unprecedented attack on southern Israel, killing over 1,200 people and taking 251 hostages. In response to the attack, Israel launched a massive attack against Hamas in the Gaza Strip, claiming the lives of at least 48000 lives and reducing nearly the whole of Gaza to rubble.

The ceasefire deal has brought a temporary reprieve to the violence, but negotiations over a second phase are likely to be challenging. The second phase involves Hamas releasing dozens more hostages in exchange for a lasting ceasefire and an Israeli withdrawal.

As part of the deal, Israel is set to release 620 Palestinian prisoners, including 151 who were serving life or other sentences. The release of the prisoners is a major concession by Israel, and it remains to be seen whether the ceasefire deal will hold.

Hamas has also announced plans to release four more bodies next week, marking the completion of the first phase of the ceasefire agreement. Amidst the ceasefire deal, the 16-month war between Israel and Hamas appears to be nearing the end of its initial ceasefire phase.
