Prime Minister Narendra Modi departs from Port Louis, Mauritius after his 2-day State Visit to the country.

PM Modi received highest national award of Mauritius while addressing at the celebration of National Day.

On PM Modi's visit to Mauritus, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri says, "There has been an exchange of as may as 8 MoUs. The PM also announced India's support towards construction of new Parliament building in Mauritus."

Prime Minister of Mauritius, Dr Navinchandra Ramgoolam, GCSK, FRCP and the Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi had comprehensive and productive discussions on the entire gamut of bilateral relations between Mauritius and India during the latter’s State Visit to Mauritius from 11 to 12 March. During the bilateral meeting held on 11 March 2025, the two leaders reaffirmed that Mauritius and India enjoy a special and unique relationship that is unparalleled, given the shared bonds of history, language, culture, heritage, kinship, and values. They further acknowledged that Mauritius-India ties, anchored in people-to-people and cultural exchanges, have grown from strength to strength in the last several decades into a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership that cuts across various domains and benefits the two countries, their people and the wider Indian Ocean Region: MEA.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday afternoon arrived for Mauritius' National Day Parade. He was accompanied by the President of Mauritius, Dharam Gokhoo, and Prime Minister of Mauritius, Navinchandra Ramgoolam.

After holding a bilateral meeting with Mauritius' top delegation, Prime Minister Narendra Modi in a p[ost tweeted, " On the special occasion of Mauritius’ National Day, I had the opportunity to meet my good friend, PM Navinchandra Ramgoolam and discuss the full range of India-Mauritius friendship. We have decided to raise our partnership to an Enhanced Strategic Partnership.   We talked about how we can work together in areas such as infrastructure, housing, digital technology, health and more. We also want to cover more ground in areas like AI, capacity building and sustainable growth."

Speaking to the media, Prime Minister Modi said, "Today, Prime Minister Navin Chandra Ramgoolam and I decided to give the India-Mauritius partnership the status of 'Enhanced Strategic Partnership'. We decided that India will cooperate in building the new Parliament building in Mauritius. This will be a gift to Mauritius from the Mother of Democracy."

India and Mauritius have signed 8 MoUs today -MoU between the Central Bank of Mauritius and the Reserve Bank of India on Local Currency Settlement System.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi's two-day state visit to Mauritius began with a warm welcome in Port Louis on Tuesday. Among those who had the chance to meet him was former Miss Mauritius Kushboo Ramnawaj, who shared her excitement about the experience. ‘Was fortunate to be able to see him live’ says Miss Mauritius Kushboo Ramnawaj.

As part of his dignitaries meeting, Prime Minister Narendra Modi met the Mauritius leader of the opposition Georges Pierre Lesjongard.

Prime Minister on Wednesday met former Mauritius PM Pravind Jugnauth. During this meeting, EAM Dr S Jaishankar and NSA Ajit Doval were also present.

Speaking at a community programme in Mauritius, PM Modi said that whenever I visit Mauritius, it feels like I am among my own.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday was conferred Mauritius' highest award, "The Grand Commander of the Order of the Star and Key of the Indian Ocean."

Strengthening ties with Mauritius is crucial for India amid China's growing presence in the Indian Ocean region.

Currently, New Delhi aims to collaborate closely with island nations like Mauritius to counterbalance China's influence in the area. The Indian Ocean region has become a geopolitical hotspot, with countries like Europe, the Gulf states, Russia, Iran, and Turkey expanding their influence.

India is focused on nurturing relationships with neighboring countries to safeguard its strategic interests.

India and Mauritius are set to sign a technical agreement on sharing white-shipping information to enhance maritime security cooperation. This agreement will allow real-time data sharing, improving regional cooperation and securing Mauritius' trading routes.

PM Modi on Tuesday was conferred with the nation’s highest honour, The Grand Commander of the Order of the Star and Key of the Indian Ocean.

Following this, the Indian PM emphasised that Mauritius is not just a partner country but a family to India.

"Mauritius, with large ocean territories, needs to secure its resources from illegal fishing, piracy and crimes. As a trusted and reliable friend, India works with Mauritius to protect your national interests and secure the Indian Ocean region,” he said.

"Mauritius is not just a partner country. For us, Mauritius is family...Mauritius is also a bridge connecting India to the wider Global South," the PM added.
 

On March 12, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will attend Mauritius's 57th National Day celebrations as the Chief Guest. The event will feature a marching contingent from the Indian Navy, an Indian Navy helicopter, the Akash Ganga Skydiving Team from the Indian Air Force, and a group of NCC cadets, all of whom will take part in the celebrations.
