Pope Francis Stable After Using Ventilation Mask for Pneumonia Treatment

Vatican City: Pope Francis is resting in the hospital as the Lenten (It's a 40-Day holy period leading up to Easter) season begins, following a night of treatment with a ventilation mask for double pneumonia. 

The Vatican reported that the 88-year-old pontiff rested well overnight, waking up shortly after 8 am Wednesday. While his condition remains stable, doctors caution that he is not yet out of danger. 

Francis, who has chronic lung disease and had part of one lung removed in his youth, suffered two respiratory crises on Monday, complicating his recovery. By Tuesday, he was breathing with the help of supplemental oxygen but resumed using a ventilation mask at night.  

Lenten Observances Without the Pope

As the Vatican marks the beginning of Lent with Ash Wednesday services, a cardinal has been designated to lead traditional observances in Francis’ absence. The pope was also scheduled to attend a spiritual retreat this weekend with Vatican officials, but it will proceed without him in "spiritual communion" with the ailing leader.  

Lent, which began on February 14, is a time of fasting, prayer, and reflection for Catholics, leading up to Easter on April 20.

Medical Concerns and Treatment

Francis, who uses a wheelchair and has limited physical activity, has been receiving respiratory physiotherapy to help clear lung secretions. Doctors are using noninvasive ventilation to support his breathing, avoiding more aggressive measures like intubation.  

While the Vatican has not disclosed any end-of-life directives from the pope, Catholic teaching allows for the suspension of extraordinary medical interventions if they are no longer beneficial.
