French President Emmanuel Macron, on Friday, signed a book of condolences for Queen Elizabeth II at the British embassy in Paris.

The French president wrote:  "Here in Paris, which she loved so much, as everywhere in France, the grief of our compatriots is immense. For seventy years, Elizabeth II was a Queen of courage and valor, a friend of France.  We are at your side. All my friendship and support Emmanuel Macron."

Queen Elizabeth II spent more than seven decades on the throne as the U.K. rebuilt from war, lost an empire, transformed its economy and both entered and left the European Union.

She was a constant presence, the only monarch most Britons have ever known, and she guided the institution of the monarchy through choppy waters.
