President of Chile Sebastián Piñera on Thursday announced results of the government's study of booster COVID-19 doses, stating that administering booster shots resulted in fewer hospitalizations.
Chile has already fully vaccinated 88.8% of adults, all of its target population, and began delivering booster shots in August specifically to those who were given the Sinovac COVID-19 vaccine.
More than 3.6 million people have received a new dose.
Piñera said using the new booster doses had resulted in fewer hospitalizations, with Sinovac reaching an effectiveness of 88%, Pfizer of 87%, and AstraZeneca of 96% in this criteria.
CoronaVac (also known as Sinovac) booster shots' effectiveness in fewer contagions increased from 56% to 80%, Pfizer's from 56% to 90%, and AstraZeneca's from 56% to 93%, the government study detailed.
In the early hours of Thursday, nearly 400,000 doses of the Pfizer-BioNTech and 242,000 of the AstraZeneca arrived in Chile.
