Serbian Athlete Lazar Dukic's Death at CrossFit Games Sparks Outrage

The 2024 CrossFit Games were overshadowed by a tragic incident involving Serbian athlete Lazar Dukic, who died on August 8 during a swim portion of the competition. Dukic, 28, was participating in an event that included a 3.5-mile run and an 800-meter swim when he went missing in Marine Creek Lake, located in northwest Fort Worth, Texas. His body was later recovered by the Fort Worth Fire Department following an hour-long search.

Dukic, known for his impressive performances in previous CrossFit Games, had been a fixture in the event since 2021, consistently ranking in the top ten. He qualified for the Games after becoming Serbia’s national champion in 2019 but chose to debut in 2021. Before his CrossFit career, Dukic was a successful water polo player, winning six national championships with Serbia.

The cause of Dukic’s death has not yet been confirmed. Footage from the event shows him struggling in the water before he failed to cross the finish line. The CrossFit Games announced his death during the competition but did not provide further details. 

CrossFit CEO Don Faul expressed deep sadness and stated that the organization is working closely with authorities in the investigation.

In the wake of the tragedy, the remainder of the day's events was canceled, and it remains unclear whether the Games, scheduled to run until August 11, will continue.
