Surfer killed in shark attack at popular surfing site in Hawaii

Identified as Jason Carter, the man sustained serious injuries from shark bites and succumbed at a local hospital in Hawaii, reports said.

A 39-year-old surfer lost his life after he was attacked by a shark in the waters off Hawaii. Identified as Jason Carter, the man sustained serious injuries from shark bites and succumbed at the Maui Memorial Medical Center, The New York Post said.

The rescue team pulled Carter out of the Paia Bay off the beach area of 93 Hana Highway, which is a popular for swimming and surfing, on December 31.

"Once onshore, life-saving measures were performed by first responder personnel until medic personnel arrived to transport the male to the Maui Memorial medical center for further treatment. The 39-year-old male from Haiku later succumbed to his injuries and died, the Police said per The Guardian.

As a result of the incident, the Baldwin Beach Park and Baby Beach close to the attack site was closed. Hawaii's Department of Land and Natural resources reportedly said that signs warning of sharks were also placed near the encounter site.

As for the deceased, he was hailed by his friends as an accomplished outdoorsman on social media, The Post reported. According to Carter's Facebook profile, he worked at ski resorts in Oregon and Colorado before moving to Hawaii.
