Torrential rain pounds southern region of South Korea

Torrential rain has continued to hammer South Korea, leaving 28 people dead and 11 others missing over this week as of Saturday.

Over the two-day period since Friday, 11 people were killed and 1 person went missing from the downpour in Gwangju and South Jeolla Province, Yonhap reported, citing the Ministry of the Interior and Safety.

A landslide destroyed five houses in Gokseong on Friday night, killing five people.

According to the latest official figures, the heavy rain that continued from August 1 across the country led to the largest casualties caused by torrential rain since 2011.

The Ministry also said 4,466 people in 11 cities and provinces have been left homeless.
