Diana's tapes reveal Charles was disappointed after Prince Harry's birth, read to know why
The unheard audio of Princess Diana has revealed that then-Prince Charles was "disappointed" following the birth of Prince Harry because he "wanted a girl".
The unheard audio of Princess Diana has revealed that then-Prince Charles was "disappointed" following the birth of Prince Harry because he "wanted a girl". In the 1990s, Diana recorded her conversation with James Colthurst for her biographer, Andrew Morton.
Diana's seven hours long audio was used by Morton to create and release 'Diana: Her True Story', a seminal book, in 1992, reported The Independent. The audio was made public 26 years later after she died in a vehicle accident. It will appear in the upcoming documentary 'Diana: The Rest of Her Story', reported ABC News.
Diana claimed in the recordings that Charles said to Raine Spencer, her stepmother, at Harry's baptism, "We're so disappointed, we wanted a girl." Spencer allegedly "snapped his head off" and told Charles, "you should realise you are lucky to have a child," according to Diana.
“Ever since that day, the shutters have come down. That’s what he does when he gets somebody answering back at him,” Diana is heard saying in the tapes.
More tapes, more trouble for the royals
The clips released might damage the UK Royals, particularly King Charles, as they come just a week before the first death anniversary of his mother, Queen Elizabeth II. Apart from this tape, there is another tape that revealed Diana's hatred for her stepmother, Raine Spencer, whom her father John had married in 1976 after her mother Frances had left.
After John died in 1992, Raine left the family seat of Althorp because of the strained relationship she had with Charles and Diana. In the recordings, Diana can be heard as angry when she says, "I was so angry. I told her, I hate you so much. If only you knew how much we all hated you for what you have done."
"You've ruined the house, you've spent Daddy's money." I said everything I possibly could and Raine said, "you have no idea how much pain mother put your father through."
'I said, "Pain, Raine? That's one word you don't even know how to relate to."
"In my job and in my role, I see people suffer like you've never seen. And you call that pain?" I said, "you've got a lot to learn."'
Notably, Diana and her siblings used to call their stepmother 'Acid Raine' and often sang, 'Raine, Raine, go away!' The new documentary, which was revealed on Good Morning America, would be a follow-up to the 2017 show, Diana: In Her Own Words. This documentary will be aired on Disney+.
The producer of both the 2017 documentary and the upcoming one, Tom Jennings, said, "When the first film came out, people were blown away because they had not heard Diana talk like this before."
"It is important as part of Diana's legacy to allow more of those tapes to be heard," said Jennings while giving an interview to the UK's local news channel.
It is to be noted that Diana recorded seven straight hours of audio while she was still married to King Charles, who was then the Prince of Wales. However, not everything was made public in the 2017 documentary. In the upcoming documentary, one would see Diana opening up about her intense unhappiness and feelings of depression forcing her to take her own life.
