U.S. Senator and former Democratic presidential candidate Amy Klobuchar have been describing her husband's bout with the coronavirus.

Klobuchar and her husband, John Bessler, spoke to Minneapolis TV station KSTP. Bessler said he went to the hospital last month after experiencing fever, low oxygen and coughing up blood. Bessler and Klobuchar say he gave plasma so that doctors and scientists could use coronavirus antibodies for research in hopes of finding a cure.

For most people, the new coronavirus causes mild or moderate symptoms, such as fever and cough that clear up in two to three weeks.

For some, especially older adults and people with existing health problems, it can cause more severe illness, including pneumonia and death.
