Automobile giant Hyundai Motors announced the name of its urban air mobility (UAM) subsidiary as 'Supernal' in Washington DC on Wednesday, November 10. The nomenclature comes almost a year after Hyundai established the subsidiary in a bid to provide flying taxi services across the globe.

According to a report by ANI, for the last one year, the company has been working on research and development (R&D) of its electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft and has planned to launch a fully-electrified flying taxi by the end of this decade.

Now that Supernal is fully introduced, it will look to expand its business by opening a new research facility in USA's California in 2022. Since last year, the company is reportedly working to develop its advanced air mobility (AAM) and has partnered with Los Angeles and Urban Lab Movement in order to prepare roadmaps and policies for public participation.

Reports have emerged that the Supernal's first fully-electric flying UAM vehicle will be launched in 2028 which will be followed by regional air mobility (RAM) for intercity operations two years later. Shin Jae Won, Hyundai's UAM division head and Supernal CEO said, "We are working towards a mission to change the way society moves, connects, and lives through the innovative mobility solution. We will approach the public with our excellent products and affordable prices". Moreover, CTO of Supernal Ben Diachun also weighed in on their next project and said, "We aimed at commercial products from the beginning, and are currently developing at the highest safety, low noise, efficiency, and reasonable prices.
