Mahindra and Mahindra will unveil the Mahindra Thar.e on August 15 in Cape Town, South Africa. The EV version of the Thar could be priced between Rs 20 lakh and Rs 25 lakh, with different variants offering varying features.
The launch of the Mahindra Thar.e is scheduled for 2025 and is expected to include both 4WD and RWD versions. The vehicle's exterior design is likely to maintain its iconic layout, albeit without a grille, while the interior will feature EV adaptations, wider seats due to the absence of a transmission tunnel, and modern amenities such as touchscreen infotainment, a digital instrument cluster, and climate control.

The Thar.e is projected to sport a battery capacity of up to 60 kWh and dual motors on both axles, providing 4WD capabilities. Safety ratings are yet to be determined as the vehicle has not undergone safety tests. It will compete with electric offerings from various brands, including Hyundai, Kia, Maruti Suzuki, Honda, MG, and Tata. The Thar.e is built on Mahindra's INGLO skateboard platform while retaining the familiar Thar design.

Previously, Mahindra had released a teaser video showcasing the upcoming Thar electric SUV. The teaser provided a glimpse of the rear tail lamp design, which remains consistent with the existing Thar model. This suggests that while the core design of the Thar will likely remain unchanged, there might be a few modifications to incorporate electric vehicle features into the Thar.e.
As of now, Mahindra's electric lineup comprises only the XUV400, which is essentially a modified version of the XUV300 subcompact SUV. However, the XUV400 didn't make a significant impact on the market when pitted against competitors like the Tata Nexon EV. In contrast, the Thar EV, upon its eventual release, could prove to be a transformative addition for Mahindra.

Currently, the company has the XUV400 EV in its electric SUV portfolio, priced between Rs 15.99 lakh and Rs 19.39 lakh (ex-showroom). Available in two primary variants, EC and EL, the SUV offers a range of colour options, including Arctic Blue, Everest White, Galaxy Grey, Napoli Black, and Infinity Blue, in both monotone and dual-tone versions, with Satin Copper dual-tone.

With a boot space of 378 litres and seating for five passengers, it offers two battery pack choices: 34.5 kWh and 39.4 kWh, paired with a single electric motor producing 150 PS and 310 Nm. The smaller battery provides a claimed range of 375km, while the larger one offers 456km. Charging times are 50 minutes (0–80 per cent charge) with a 50 kW DC Fast Charger, 6.5 hours with a 7.2 kW AC Charger, and 13 hours with a 3.3 kW Domestic Charger.
Features include a 7-inch touchscreen with over 60 connected car features, electrically adjustable and foldable ORVMs, a sunroof, cruise control, and push-button start-stop. Safety features encompass up to six airbags, cornering brake control, ESP, TPMS, hill hold assist, and a rear parking camera.
