Xero Australia MD reveals the 'coffee cup test' which applicants must pass to join, Twitter shocked at the caffeine horror

Trent Innes, boss of an accounting software firm - Xero Australia has revealed in a business podcast, the 'coffee cup test' which is mandatory for every potential employee to pass to join the company.

Interviews have always been nerve-wracking for many, while a few brimming with confidence cruise through easily. The main thing which makes people dread interviews when it comes to jobs is the intense scrutiny the aspiring employee is put under by the boss.

And this particular boss is not making things easy.

Trent Innes, boss of an accounting software firm - Xero Australia has revealed in a business podcast, the 'coffee cup test' which is mandatory for every potential employee to pass to join the company. In fact, anyone who fails the test is actually blacklisted from the company.

Talking to the podcast host - entrepreneur Lambros Photios, Innes shared details of the test.

"I will always take you for a walk down to one of our kitchens and somehow you always end up walking away with a drink," he said.

He then added the point where he evaluates the employee saying:

"Then we take the drink back, have our interview. One of the things I’m always looking for at the end of the interview is, does the person doing the interview want to take that empty cup back to the kitchen?"

Explaining why taking the cup back to the kitchen was so important to him, he said that it ascertained one's attitude to 'wash your coffee cup'.

"You can develop skills, you can gain knowledge and experience but it really does come down to attitude, and the attitude that we talk a lot about is the concept of 'wash your coffee cup'," he added.

He claims that his trick works, and the kitchens in their office are always very clean.
