Gautam Adani, in collaboration with Mumbai's slum rehabilitation authority, has enlisted a global team for the ambitious overhaul of Dharavi, one of Asia's largest slums.

The project, facing increasing opposition, aims to transform the crowded area, equivalent to three-quarters of New York's Central Park, and home to numerous impoverished families lacking basic amenities.

Originally proposed in the 1980s, the Maharashtra state government approved Adani's $619 million bid in July for the redevelopment, heralded as "the world's largest urban renewal scheme."

The joint venture, Dharavi Redevelopment Project (DRPPL), announced its partnership with renowned architect Hafeez Contractor, along with US design firm Sasaki and UK consultancy firm Buro Happold.

Concerns have also been raised about Adani's ability to deliver, given recent high-profile financial setbacks.

Adani said that the project was secured through a fair, open, and globally competitive bidding process, a claim supported by the state government, which has denied any impropriety.

Last month, thousands protested against Adani's redevelopment plans, marching towards the conglomerate's Mumbai offices.

The controversy surrounding the project underscores the challenges and scrutiny faced by Adani as it endeavours to revitalise Dharavi.
