Biogas in focus: Gail India, a state-owned enterprise, and Trualt Bioenergy have announced a collaboration to establish 10 compressed biogas (CBG) plants, committing an investment exceeding $72 million. As outlined in a joint statement released on Wednesday, the joint venture will be structured with a 51 per cent ownership by Trualt Bioenergy, with Gail India holding the remaining equity stake.

The investment for this venture will be financed through a blend of debt and equity. Trualt Bioenergy, headquartered in Bengaluru and established in 2021, currently operates India's second-largest CBG plant through its subsidiary, Leafiniti Bioenergy.

Annual treatment of 600 million kgs of organic waste

The forthcoming CBG facilities are projected to process more than 600 million kilograms of diverse organic waste materials annually. These include agricultural residues, sugarcane press mud, and by-products such as spent wash from ethanol production. The output from these plants is anticipated to comprise over 33 million kilograms of CBG, approximately 20 million kilograms of solid-fermented organic fertiliser, and in excess of 30 million kilograms of liquid-fermented organic fertiliser each year.

Each of the planned CBG plants will possess a daily processing capacity of 10,000 kilograms, culminating in a cumulative daily CBG production of 100,000 kilograms. This collaboration signifies a significant stride towards bolstering India's renewable energy infrastructure and addressing environmental sustainability concerns.
