Tata to make iPhones in India: Tata Group has taken over Wistron operations, marking a major milestone in India's electronics manufacturing sector. This move is set to pave the way for iPhone manufacturing in India for both domestic and global markets.

According to the official announcement made by Rajeev Chandrasekhar, Union Minister of State for Electronics and Technology, the takeover of Wistron operations by Tata will set the stage for Apple's iPhones to be produced in India. Tata Companies will manage the operations previously held by Wistron, and this transition is poised to strengthen Apple's global supply chain while contributing to India's growing electronics manufacturing ecosystem.

According to the official announcement by Wistron, the sale of Wistron's 100  per cent indirect stake in Wistron InfoComm Manufacturing (India) Private Limited (WMMI) is valued at approximately $125 million (around 3.89 billion).

About Wistron 

Wistron is a global supplier of information and communications products with headquarters in Taiwan. They have a strong presence in Asia, Europe, and North America, with operational bases for logistics and distribution. 
Originally the manufacturing division of Acer Inc., it became an independent entity through a spin-off in the year 2000. Functioning as an Original Design Manufacturer (ODM), Wistron specialises in the design and production of a wide array of products, which are subsequently marketed and sold by other companies under their respective brand names.

Their product portfolio spans notebooks, desktop computers, servers, storage solutions, LCD TVs, handheld devices, and various equipment designed for medical applications.

Wistron is known for its robust research and development infrastructure and a skilled technical team that can deliver on various customer demands. Wistron boasts a global workforce exceeding 80,000 employees and operates from a network comprising 12 manufacturing facilities, 10 research and development centres, and 14 customer service centres.

The deal is currently awaiting confirmation and signature of relevant agreements by both parties, after which it will proceed through the necessary approvals and regulatory procedures, with Wistron pledging to provide further announcements and filings as per applicable regulations. The cooperation between Tata and Wistron represents a significant step forward in realising India's potential as a trusted manufacturing and talent partner for global electronics companies.
