New Delhi: The Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) has recently launched a post-graduate programme in Bhagavad Gita Studies. The programme will be offered through open and distance learning mode (ODL) from July this year. Candidates who have a bachelor's degree can apply for MA in Bhagavad Gita Studies online. The Specialised MA course in Bhagavad Gita Studies will offer flexible study durations of two to four years. There are a total of 500 seats for the course. The medium of instructions will be Hindi. It will be structured for 80 credits.
Students enrolled in the course will have to pay a fee of Rs 12,600 for the entire two-year course or Rs 6300 annually.
"With the approval of competent authority, the programme MA Bhagavad Gita Studies (MABGS) will be offered through ODL mode from the July 2024 session," reads the official notice.

“The Bhagavad Gita is the essence of the Indian knowledge tradition. It encompasses the wisdom of the entire Indian philosophical heritage. This undisputed scripture integrates the knowledge of the Brahma Sutras, the six philosophies (Shad Darshanas), and the Upanishads, along with scientific and cultural knowledge. It provides insights into combating poverty, eliminating extremism, addressing issues of war, military, environment, management, sociology, and human values, as well as the scientific perspectives of Indian thought traditions. Individuals from diverse backgrounds in knowledge, science, art, and literature can enroll in this program and study. By fully understanding the essence of Indian sciences and gaining practical knowledge, the program aims to create well-rounded educated citizens with exemplary personalities. The purpose of this program is to present the accepted educational pathways, subjects, and various facets of knowledge and science to all sections of society as envisioned in the national education policy. Thus, the goal of the postgraduate degree program in the Bhagavad Gita is to impart knowledge of the originative Vedic literature, various scriptures, Puranas, epics, cultural consciousness, and scientific aspects of Indian knowledge traditions to all sections of society,” the prospectus reads.
