Rajgir: Prime Minister Narendra Modi today inaugurated the new campus of Nalanda University in Rajgir, Bihar, lauding the state government's efforts to revive the ancient institution. In his speech, PM Modi emphasized Nalanda's historical significance and its future potential as a global center of education and cultural exchange.
Reviving Nalanda's Glorious Past
PM Modi highlighted that Nalanda University is the pride of Bihar and a symbol of India's rich educational heritage. He explained the meaning of "Nalanda," derived from "Na-Alam-Dadati," which translates to "where education and knowledge flow continuously." This philosophy underscores the continuous pursuit of learning that characterized the ancient university, which thrived for centuries as a beacon of knowledge.
Inclusive Education
Modi emphasized that Nalanda University has always been a place where education transcends boundaries. Historically, admission was not based on religion, nationality, or class, attracting students from many countries. This inclusive tradition continues today, with students from over 20 countries currently enrolled.
A Cultural and Research Hub
Looking ahead, PM Modi envisioned Nalanda University as a main center of cultural exchange. The new campus includes a common archival resource center for documenting art works from India and Southeast Asian countries. Additionally, efforts are underway to establish an ASEAN-India University Network, further solidifying Nalanda's role in fostering international cooperation and cultural preservation.
Sustainable and Innovative Campus
The new Nalanda University campus is a model of sustainability. It operates on a net-zero energy, emission, and waste model, featuring a solar power grid for electricity. PM Modi praised this innovative approach, aligning with his broader vision of sustainable development for India.
India's Educational Aspirations
PM Modi connected the development of educational institutions like Nalanda University with India's broader goal of becoming a developed nation by 2047. He stressed the importance of education and knowledge as foundational elements in achieving this vision. "My mission is to make India an education and knowledge center for the world," he declared, envisioning India regaining its historical identity as a prominent global knowledge hub.
Boosting Innovation and Research
Reflecting on the progress of India's startup ecosystem, PM Modi noted that a decade ago, there were only about 100 startups in the country. Today, there are over 1.3 lakh startups, a testament to the success of initiatives like Startup India. He also announced a significant boost for research and innovation, with the government allocating Rs 1 lakh crore for a research fund to encourage student-driven innovation.
Improved Global Rankings
PM Modi highlighted the improved global standing of Indian universities in recent years. A decade ago, only nine Indian universities were listed in the QS World University Rankings. This number has risen to 46 today. Similarly, the Times Higher Education Impact Rankings now include nearly 100 Indian institutions, up from just 13 a decade ago.
A Vision for the Future
In his concluding remarks, PM Modi expressed confidence in India's youth and their potential to lead the world. He emphasized the need for a comprehensive and advanced research-oriented higher education system in India, envisioning Nalanda University as a critical center for global causes.
"Our effort is to have the most comprehensive and complete skilling system in the world in India. To have the most advanced research-oriented higher education system in the world in India. I am confident that our youth will lead the world in the coming times. I believe that Nalanda will become an important center for global causes," said PM Modi, reinforcing his commitment to making India a global leader in education and research.
