Telangana Govt Makes Telugu Compulsory for Classes 1-10 in CBSE, ICSE, IB Schools

The Telangana government has issued orders for teaching Telugu as a compulsory subject for students of 1st to 10th classes in CBSE , ICSE, IB and other boards affiliated schools in the state from the 2025-26 academic year. The state government had brought in the Telangana (Compulsory Teaching and Learning of Telugu in Schools) Act in 2018 to make teaching Telugu compulsory in government Zilla Parishad, mandal parishad, aided schools as well as CBSE, ICSE, IB and other Board affiliated schools. 

According to an official release issued on Tuesday, the previous BRS government did not implement the Telangana (Compulsory Teaching and Learning of Telugu in Schools) Act full-fledged for various reasons.

The current Congress government has now taken steps to implement the Act in schools across the state. A meeting was held with school management to discuss the implementation, and the government has decided that Telugu will be taught as a compulsory subject for Classes 9 and 10 in CBSE, ICSE, and other board-affiliated schools starting in the upcoming academic year. 

According to a memo issued by Education Department Secretary Dr Yogita Rana, Telugu will become a compulsory subject for Class IX students from the academic year 2025-26, and for Class X students from the 2026-27 academic year. 

To make it easier for non-Telugu speaking students to learn, Telugu will be taught in a simplified manner using the 'Vennela' textbook. 

The government believes that teaching simplified Telugu will help both non-native Telugu-speaking students and those from other states who come to Telangana for education.
