It has been an exciting match between two sportspersons, who this time fought in a political arena. The fight for Jaipur Rural was contested between BJP's Col Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore who is the sitting MP and Congress' Krishna Poonia - both of whom are Olympians.
Poonia has been an international gold-medalist in Discus Throwing, while Col Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore is a retired Indian Army officer and has won an Olympics Silver medal in Shooting.
Union Minister Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore wins with 811626 votes against Congress' Krishna Poonia.
In 2009, the Congress' Lal Chand Kataria had won in the seat. In 2014, however, Col Rathore won by a margin of 3,32,896 votes against Congress candidate Dr CP Joshi.
Battle-hardened Poonia is not new to politics. She represents Churu district’s Sadulpur assembly seat. The Jaipur Rural seat was formed in 2008 owing to the implementation of delimitation of Parliamentary constituencies.
The constituency has a 19.33 lakh-strong electorate, 9.12 lakh of whom are women. Of the eight assembly segments in the Lok Sabha constituency, the ruling Congress has 5 seats, two are with the BJP and one is with an Independent MLA.
