EC issues notice to Azam Khan asking him to explain his several controversial speeches in Rampur, UP within 24 hours

The Election Commission has sent yet another notice to Samajwadi Party's Azam for his "highly objectionable" speeches in various parts of Rampur during the Lok Sabha elections. The poll body has said that the leader has made several objectionable statements during the period of April 7-12, 2019 and has asked him to explain the statements.

The Election Commission has sent yet another notice to Samajwadi Party's Azam Khan for his "highly objectionable" speeches in various parts of Rampur during the Lok Sabha elections. The poll body has said that the leader has made several objectionable statements during the period of April 7-12, 2019 and has asked him to explain the statements.

The poll body has asked the Khan to submit his explanation within 24 hours of the receipt of the notice, failing which it will take action against him.

"Your explanation shall be submitted within 24 hours of the receipt of this Notice, failing which the Commission shall take a decision without further reference to you," the notice said.

On Monday, Khan had been issued a notice by the Election Commission imposing a 72-hour prohibition staring 10 am on Tuesday for his reprehensible comment against khaki comment against BJP candidate Jaya Prada. It further reprimanded the leader for his remark. 

Along with the punishment, an FIR under Section 509 of IPC and Section 125 of Representation of the People Act, 1951 has been lodged against the senior SP leader for his 'indecent' and 'repugnant' comment against Jaya Prada.

Khan had been banned for campaigning in Uttar Pradesh for his misconduct and 'provocative' speech back in Lok Sabha 2014 and even in 2019, the poll body has stated that he has violated the Model Code of Conduct. 

He has been barred from holding public meetings, public processions, public rallies, road shows and interviews, public utterances in media (print, electronic and social media) for 72 hours.

After Republic TV  on Tuesday confronted the senior Samajwadi Party leader on the EC ban at Bhopal Airport, Azam Khan did not respond to the questions posed by Republic. However, he went on to ignore the media and ask counter questions to the reporters as well.

"Why are you stopping my way? Will you teach me how to behave now? Is this the character of channels?" said Azam Khan responding to the questions on objectionable remarks against BJP leader Jaya Prada in public rally.
