Twenty-one years after officially separating from the Congress, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee-led TMC (Trinamool Congress) has removed Rahul Gandhi-led grand old party's name from its logo. West Bengal’s ruling party will just be called Trinamool from now.
The development has come only days ahead of the 2019 Lok Sabha polls, in which West Bengal will go into in all seven phases starting from April 11.
With 'Trinamool' written in green with twin flowers and blue background in the new logo, the party has been using it for a couple of days now, a party source told.
"TMC is called Trinamool and after 21 years, it was time for a change," a party leader said.
The name of 'Congress' has been dropped from party banners, posters and all communication material.
However, being recognised as a national party since September 2016, it will remain registered with the Election Commission as Trinamool Congress, party sources added.
It was way back in 1998 that present West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee broke away from the Congress and formed the TMC over differences of opinion on dealing with the then ruling CPI(M).
Meanwhile, the official Facebook and Twitter pages of the party and the leaders of the party including the Chief Minister, her nephew Abhishek Banerjee, and Trinamool's leader in the Rajya Sabha Derek O Brien already have the new logo.
