Incumbent CM Gehlot submits his resignation from the chief minister's post to Rajasthan Governor Kalraj Mishra. 

Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot on Sunday said the assembly poll results were "unexpected for everyone" and added the party humbly accepted the people's mandate.

The BJP was appeared set to win the assembly polls in Rajasthan, defeating the Congress. According to latest available trends, the BJP won 52 seats and was ahead in 63, while the Congress won 26 and was leading in 43.

Rajasthan Chief Electoral Officer Praveen Gupta on Sunday said that 12 to 17 rounds of counting of votes have been completed and the final result is expected to be declared by 1.30 pm.

As per the trends displayed on the website of the Election Commission of India, the BJP was leading on 112 seats in Rajasthan and the Congress on 71 out of the 199 seats that went to polls on November 25.

Results show people accepted PM Modi's promise of delivering on guarantees, said BJP's poll in-charge for Rajasthan Pralhad Joshi as the saffron party registered a lead in 109 out of 200 assembly seats. 

"People have totally endorsed the leadership and program of PM Modi and specially in northern part of India people have totally rejected the Congress party. Only in Telangana, they (Congress) can feel satisfied that's also because in southern states, except Karnataka, the presence of BJP is not there. Dotasra leads in Lacchmangarh

Rajasthan assembly Speaker C P Joshi was trailing his BJP rival Vishvaraj Singh Mewar in Rajsamand district's Nathdwara seat, while state Congress chief Govind Singh Dotasra was leading in Lacchmangarh as early trends for the assembly polls poured in on Sunday.

According to the Election Commission (EC) website, Joshi was trailing by 1,154 votes and Dotasra was leading with a margin of 1,618.

Preparations completed, postal ballots to be counted first: CEO Praveen Gupta

Counting of votes polled in Rajasthan will be done at 36 centres in the state on Sunday, December 3, Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Praveen Gupta said, adding that preparations have been done regarding the same. 

Preparations, including security arrangements, have been completed for the counting process, which will begin at 8 am, the official said. The counting of ballot papers will be done first, followed by votes registered in electronic voting machines (EVMs), he said.

Important seats to watch out in Rajasthan

1. Sardarpura - Rajasthan CM Ashok Gehlot is contesting the election from the Sardarpura constituency which has been a stronghold for Congress. He will be defending his seat against BJP's Mahendra Singh Rathore.

In 2018, Gehlot won the Sardarpura seat by securing 45,990 votes against the BJP's Shambhu Singh.

2. Jhalrapatan - Two time Rajasthan CM and BJP candidate Vasundhara Raje is contesting from Jhalrapatan, which she has represented since 2003. Raje was appointed the CM for the first time after she defeated Congress candidate and Sachin Pilot's mother Rama Pilot.

She again was appointed as the CM after the BJP won 163 seats out of 200 in 2013 and Raje won against Meenakshi Chandrawat by a margin of more than 60,000 votes. She also secured her constituency against Manvendra Singh despite BJP's loss in 2018.

Raje is being challenged by Congress party's Ramlal Chauhan in 2023.

3. Tonk - Sachin Pilot is the sitting MLA from Tonk and he is being challenged by the BJP's Ajit Singh Mehta. Pilot won the constituency by defeating BJP's Yoonus Khan by a margin over over 54, 179 votes. The constituency is said to have a considerably high population of Gujjars, Meenas and Muslims.

4. Jhotwara - BJP has fielded Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore from Jhotwara constituency which was won by Congress in 2018. The Olympian-turned-politican will be contesting against Congress party's Abhishek Choudhary.

In 2018, Jhotwara was won by Lal Chanda Kataria who defeated BJP's Rajpal Singh Shekhawat by a margin over 10,747 votes.

5. Nathdwara - Nathdwara is up for grabs between BJP candidate and the descendant of Maharana Pratap Singh, Vishwaraj Singh Mewar and Congress candidate CP Joshi.

Joshi is the current speaker of Rajasthan assembly and he defeated BJP's Mahesh Pratap Singh by a margin of 16,940 seats in 2018.

6. Churu - Churu has been a stronghold for the BJP as it has won four out of five assembly elections in 1998, 2003, 2013 and 2018.

For 2023, the BJP has fielded Harlal Saharan against Congress candidate Rafiz Mandelia. In 2018, Rajendra Rathore of the BJP won by a margin of 1,461 votes against Mandelia, who gave a tough competition to the BJP.

Exit Polls predict edge to BJP in Rajasthan

BJP, riding high on the anti-incumbency wave, is likely to form the government in Rajasthan as per the Matrize exit poll prediction. The saffron party is expected to bag anywhere between 115 to 130 seats while the Congress is expected to get around 65-75 seats. At least 100 seats are required to form the government in Rajasthan.

A look at last poll results

In the last assembly elections held in 2018, Congress became the single largest party with 100 seats, short of majority by 1 seat in the 200-member assembly. However, in 2013, the BJP secured 163 seats under the leadership of former CM Vasundhara Raje Scindia while the Congress party could only manage to win 21 seats.

All you need to know about Rajasthan assembly polls

Rajasthan has a total of 200 assembly seats but polling was held on 199 seats as election in Karanpur seat of Sriganganagar district was postponed following the death of Congress candidate Gurmeet Singh Koonar. There are 5,25,38,105 voters in the 199 assembly constituencies.

Highest voter turnout was recorded in Jaisalmer’s Pokaran with 87.79%, closely followed by Alwar’s Tijara with 86.11%.
