The internet has been buzzing about the S. Shankar's directorial ever since it's making was announced. It stars megastar Rajinikanth along with Bollywood actor Akshay Kumar and Amy Jackson. The magnum opus initially received good reviews from the audience and the critics. They not only appreciated the actors' performance but also were impressed by the out of box storyline. They praised the director for his imagination and also said the VFX effects can compete with Hollywood.

As per media reports, the film recorded a grand opening with a collection of over Rs.125 crores. Although the Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI) have reportedly launched a complaint against the film for promoting "obscurantist and anti-scientific attitudes toward the mobile phone, towers and mobile services," it had a smooth release.

Film critic Taran Adarsh declared it a blockbuster and praised the performance of the actors. He took to Twitter and said, "#OneWordReview… #2Point0: BLOCKBUSTER. Rating: #2Point0 is a cinematic marvel... This has style with substance... Director Shankar is a visionary... He hits the ball out of the park this time... Akshay Kumar is FANTASTIC, while Rajinikanth is THE BOSS... SALUTE!"
