Bollywood megastar Amitabh Bachchan has appeared in innumerable super hit films in his career spanning about five decades. The Shahenshah actor has many accolades to his name including Dadasaheb Phalke Award, the Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award, Knight of the Legion of Honour by France, apart from other National Awards for his body of work. Here are some of his highest-grossing films in his acting career.
Chandra Barot’s Don featured Zeenat Aman, Helen, Pran, Om Shivpuri, Pinchoo Kapoor and Satyen Kappu alongside Amitabh Bachchan. The action thriller portrays Bachchan in a double role as a Bombay-based underworld 'Don' and his lookalike, Vijay who is a slum-dweller. Vijay's uncanny resemblance to Don leads him to become a police informant. He helps them in tracking down the root of the underworld criminal organization. Don turned out to be the third highest-grossing film of 1978 and was classified by Box Office India as a golden jubilee. Don gave birth to the Don franchise with three installments and inspired many south Indian remakes, including the 1980 Tamil film Billa featuring the legendary Rajinikanth.
Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s movie starring Amitabh Bachchan and Rani Mukerji in lead roles was released in 2005. Black draws inspiration from Helen Keller’s life. The film revolves around a deaf and blind girl’s struggle and her relationship with her teacher who develops Alzheimer’s disease as he approaches death. Loosely based on The Miracle Worker, the drama became the second highest-grossing movie worldwide during 2005 and the highest-grossing Indian film overseas. Black earned numerous awards for the lead actors’ jaw-dropping performances.
Helmed by Ravi Chopra, Baghban stars Hema Malini and Amitabh Bachchan in lead roles. It also features Salman Khan in a pivotal role. The 2003 Hindi drama film is an unofficial adaptation of critically acclaimed Hollywood flick Make Way For Tomorrow, which was released in 1937. The onscreen chemistry between Bachchan and Malini made the film highly appreciated. After more than fourteen years, Baghban still does not fail to bring tears in the viewers' eyes. The highlight of the movie is Bachchan’s monologue in the end. The film was the third highest-grossing flick of the year.
