While it is true that many new-age directors are moving away from the clichéd topics of romance and action, the biggest drive in this change is still actors. When Ayushmann was offered another rom-com movie by Anubhav Sinha, the actor asked for a gritty film instead, and this is how Article 15 was made. Ayushmann Khurrana has continuously pushed the limits of mainstream Hindi cinema constructing his career on risky but successful choices.
With films like Andhadhun and Badhaai Ho, actor Ayushmann Khurrana has proved that he has the courage and talent to pull off unconventional roles. Setting his foot in Bollywood with Shoojit Sircar’s Vicky Donor in 2012, Ayushmann has come a long way to bagging a National Award recently. His 2015 release Dum Laga Ke Haisha gave him the validity that he was missing before. With Ashwiny Iyer Tiwary’s 2017 film Bareilly Ki Barfi, the actor got into mainstream cinema. He is now one of the most sought-after actors of 2019 with four back-to-back hits. In an interview with one of the portals, when asked about his fascination for movies with social impact, Ayushmann Khurrana revealed that his "staple" were movies with a social message but which also belong to mainstream cinema.
Ayushmann’s first movie Vicky Donor dealt with the taboo of infertility and sperm donation. Starring opposite Yami Gautam, he played the role of a sperm donor whose wife had a hard time accepting this fact about him. The movie earned him a lot of praise as a new-comer. Dum Laga Ke Haisha saw the actor in the role of a husband who was displeased with his over-weight wife. The 2017 release Shubh Mangal Saavdhan showed him in the role of a man suffering from erectile dysfunction. Bareilly Ki Barfi featured him in the character of a jilted lover. Ayushmann Khurrana entered the 100 crore club with Badhaai Ho in 2018 which was about middle-age pregnancy. Andhadhun shows him in a moral fix having witnessed a murder while pretending to be a blind person. In the 2019 release Article 15, Ayushmann starred as a police officer battling against caste-based crimes in the area.
However, Ayushmann Khurrana’s movie, Dream Girl, is what he describes as being a totally ‘Masala Movie’. The movie is about a man who can modulate his voice to sound like a woman. Not all may know but Ayushmann can actually do this in real life. For the next few months, he has his kitty full with Bala which is about premature balding; Shubh Mangal Zyada Savdhaan, a same-sex love story; and Gulabo Sitabo is light-hearted in tone but deep in what it tries to explore.
