Since ages, Bollywood has often showcased all things mushy in most of the movies. After all, dupattas were the original wingman in our love lives. However, over the years, the concept of ‘Ishq wala love’ stories have changed. Bollywood filmmakers have brought in more realistic and matured content to the Hindi cinema. Here are some of the finest Bollywood movies from the past few years that cited stories which explored many shades of love and not just ‘Ishq wala love’.

Dear Zindagi (2016)

We usually fall in love with others, instead of falling in love with our own selves. Do we even realise how important it is to love ourselves before loving another person? Sometimes, falling in love with ourselves is the most beautiful things in the world, as Kiara does in Dear Zindagi. As an impactful movie, it managed to start a conversation around mental health, but the true highlight of the movie was how, without being dramatic, it managed to make a positive impact in the society. It is a classic coming-of-age drama that will be with us for long.

Tumhari Sulu (2017)

Tumhari Sulu treated us with the fact that motherhood is not the only aspect of a woman who is a mother. The film is about an ambitious housewife who wins a contest and auditions for a night show at a radio station. Things change when she starts working at a radio station. Mothers also have ambitions, talents, and that they deserve to be respected for their choices. Tumhari Sulu was a wonderfully simple, slice of life movie where even the side characters like a cab driver, a female boss and others conveyed meaningful messages.
