Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer is undoubtedly one of the biggest releases of 2023. Despite releasing alongside Greta Gerwig’s Barbie, which has made more than $1.3 billion at the global box office, Oppenheimer is almost at the $800 million mark. Even though the niche appeal of the subject matter, Oppenheimer even made strides in India, crossing the Rs 150 crore mark (gross). Now, Oppenheimer has made another giant leap.

3 things you need to know:

  • Oppenheimer was released alongside Barbie on July 21.
  • Both films have made more than $2 billion combined at the box office.
  • Oppenheimer is the 13th film of Christopher Nolan’s career.

Oppenheimer leaves Deadpool, Logan behind

Oppenheimer has now become the 2nd most successful R-rated film of all time. It achieved this feat by reaching a box office collection of $851 million approximately. Given the non-franchise nature of Oppenheimer, its almost dialogue-driven nature along with its dense subject matter, Oppenheimer’s success is quite unusual. However, it does carry the weight of Christopher Nolan’s signature filmmaking and received quite a marketing push with Barbie’s success. Oppenheimer is only behind the Joaquin Phoenix starrer Joker, which has made more than $1 billion at the global box office.

Other films behind Oppenheimer

At the global box office, Oppenheimer is at the second spot against the likes of the Ryan Reynolds starrer satirical superhero flicks Deadpool 2 ($786 million) and Deadpool ($781 million). Other films on the list are The Matrix Reloaded ($738 million), It ($701 million), Detective Chinatown 3 ($699 million), and The Passion of the Christ ($622 million).

Hugh Jackman’s then-send-off Logan is at the ninth position ($614 million) and The Hangover II ($586 million). Domestically, it’s in the seventh position and is behind the likes of Deadpool 2 ($324 million), It ($328 million), Joker ($335 million) and American Sniper ($350 million).
