Ajith's 'Viswasam' beats elections, CWC to lead '2019 most influential moments on Twitter'

What was the most influential event of 2019? The Indian general elections would be the answer for most, and the sports lovers might feel it would be the Cricket World Cup. Both the events might have been among the most-discussed topics, but not on Twitter, the platform known for its fast-paced buzz and trends over current issues. Both the major events were surprisingly beaten by Tamil film Viswasam. The microblogging platform recently announced that the Ajith-starrer was the ‘Most Influential Moment’of 2019 as of now.

At a recent event ‘Launch 2020’ where Twitter addressed some of the major business leaders, the platform announced the top 5 Twitter trends. Viswasam, that released in January, lead the list, and this was followed by the Lok Sabha elections, that was held around April-May. The Cricket World Cup, that was held in May-July, was third on the list. The list also featured another film from South, Maharshi, the May Telugu film starring Mahesh Babu, on no 4, while #HappyDiwali completed the list. Sathya Jyothi Films, the producers of Viswasam, shared a still from the event with the top 5 trends showing on the screen. They captioned the post, “#Ajith sir fans, you guys prove your #Viswasam and #Valimai yet again. Thank you for making this big. Thank you @TwitterIndia @MomentsIndia. #Launch2020 “

Twitter reacts

Twitter, however, clarified that this is not their ‘Official Year on Twitter’ list and that it was only a representation of some of the most influential moments this year. Responding to a fan’s excitement over Viswasam, the handle wrote, “We are excited that you're excited about this Tweet, but this is just a representation of some influential moments this year. You'll have to wait a little longer for our official Year on Twitter list to see which moments were the most Tweeted about in 2019.”

It would be interesting to see if some other major trend can catch Twitter by fire in the remaining one-and-a-half months of this year. If not, Viswasam is all set to be top Twitter trend. In fact, Viswasam due to its release at the start of the year, was also No 2 on 2018’s list. It was beaten by another Tamil film, Sarkar, starring Vijay, last year.
