There's always been a conflict between development & conservation. Yes, the city needs to build infrastructure to support a growing population. But the city also needs trees & parks & greenery. We need to protect nature like life depends on it. Because it does.#LetMumbaiBreathe

Massacre is what this is! We are our own worst enemy! Infrastructure can never precede nature! We need to STOP! #SaveAarey

Actor Varun Dhawan took to Twitter and penned down, "This is heartbreaking news. With such an outcry to stop the cutting of trees why is this being allowed Mumbai has done enough for the people in power to realise cutting down Aarey is something the citizens don’t want"

Protests ensued at Aarey colony
The Bombay High Court on October 4 refused to announce the Aarey colony a forest. It further declined all the four petitions against the felling of trees. Protests in the colony ensued after the authorities from Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation Limited (MMRCL) allegedly started axing the trees on the same day after the Bombay High Court's dismissal of all the petitions challenging the felling of trees. However, videos of the trees being cut at Aarey surfaced on social media which led to locals gathering at the forest as a sign of protest. According to sources, police had to resort to lathi-charge to stop the protests.
