John Abraham is gearing up for the release of his upcoming movie The Diplomat, which is based on a real-life incident. To promote his action-drama, John came to Republic Media Network's studio where he spilled the beans about the movie and also opened up about the business The Diplomat is likely to make at the box office. The actor's last movie was Vedaa, co-starring Sharvari Wagh and earned positive reviews from the audience.

John Abraham's candid take on The Diplomat's box office run

During the rapid-fire session, when asked how much he expects The Diplomat would earn since it's a single release on Holi, the actor said that he didn't know the commerce but is hoping that it trumps the collection of his previous releases like Batla House, Madras Cafe and Parmanu. "I don't know about the commerce. I know it's a very good film. It's a very credible film, and I know audiences come to see good films. I've done Madras Cafe before, Parmanu and Batla House. And I hope The Diplomat trumps all that and does better."

The Diplomat, helmed by Shivam Nair, is set against a backdrop of real-life political events. The film explores themes of diplomacy, international relations, and the personal conflicts faced by diplomats. In the movie, he plays the role of JP Singh, an Indian diplomat in Islamabad.

John Abraham's highest-grossing film

In a career spanning over 20 years, John's career graph has been impressive, from successful model and actor to now a superstar, he never failed to surprise his audience. Not just as a hero of the film but also as a villain, he impressed his audience. However, it was his comical movies that always stood out from his filmography and made him earn his highest-grossing movie - Dostana. Co-starring Priyanka Chopra and Abhishek Bachchan, it grossed over ₹871 million.

Studios don't have faith in movies like The Diplomat: John Abraham

In an interview with Republic, John shared how his movies may not work at the box office as much as others as they are story-driven and lack popular and crowd-pulling elements like a dance number or a romance track with the heroine. He laments that all "missing" elements affect the film's business and hopes the audience becomes more supportive of the projects he picks in the future. Appearing on Nation First with Republic Media Network Editor-In-Chief Arnab Goswami, John reflected on the non-performance of his "brand of cinema" at the box office. "They (the films) do not follow a commercial formula. I don't have a dance, I don't have a hero. Most of the time my wife dies in the beginning so I continue from there. So, I have a problem selling these films, but I hope we get braver in the community," he shared.

Speaking about turning producer to support the kind of storytelling he is more inclined towards, John also touched upon how often his movies' potential would often get overlooked due to initial scepticism around the subject matter and how the audience and the naysayers' perception would change after they worked well at the ticket window. He hinted that the "struggle" to tell good stories is an ongoing one and he endures losses often in the films he produces and stars in.

Coming back to The Diplomat, the movie will hit the theatres on March 14, coinciding with Holi.  It is his first release of 2025.
