Bollywood actor Noor Malabika Das, who starred in a 2023 web series The Trail alongside Kajol, allegedly died by suicide at her flat in Oshiwara, Mumbai. Her decomposed body was found on Friday evening after neighbours complained of a foul smell emanating from her apartment. Investigations have revealed that the actor hanged herself from the ceiling fan in her flat on Tuesday evening, and a neighbour informed the police about the foul smell.

After the news of Noor's death became public, All Indian Cine Workers Association (AICWA) urged the Maharashtra government to investigate the "underlying causes behind recurring suicide cases in the Indian film industry".

AICWA urges investigation into Noor Malabika Das death case

In a long post, AICWA expressed concern over frequent deaths by suicide of artists working in the entertainment industry. Speaking specifically about Noor's case, the film body urged the authorities to consider the possibility of foul play and explore the case from a potential murder angle.

Their post on X (formerly Twitter) read, "Actress Noor Malabika Das, who had acted in several Bollywood films, tragically took her own life on June 6, 2024, at the young age of 37 | She was found in her flat in Lokhandwala, Mumbai. This unfortunate incident underscores a serious issue within the Bollywood and broader Indian film industry, where reports of suicides among actors and actresses are alarmingly frequent. It is imperative for the government to investigate the underlying causes behind these recurring tragedies in the Indian film industry (sic)."

It further read, "All Indian Cine Workers Association is calling on Maharashtra Chief Minister Honourable Shri Eknath Shinde and Home Minister Honourable Shri Devendra Fadnavis to conduct a thorough investigation into the suicide case of Actress Noor Malabika Das. It is crucial that the Investigation also consider the possibility of foul play and explore the case from a potential murder angle (sic)."

What do we know about Noor's alleged suicide case?

Investigations have revealed that Noor Malabika Das hanged herself from the ceiling fan in her flat on Tuesday evening, and a neighbour informed the police about the foul smell. The police team broke down the door and discovered the body and found a table and rope at the scene, the official said. Noor suffered from depression and was on medication. No suicide note was recovered from the spot, the official said, adding that an accidental death reports (ADR) has been registered.
