Sujoy Ghosh On His Failure Of Aladin: Amitabh Bachchan Was First Person To Support Me

Filmmaker Sujoy Gosh has a penchant for thriller movies. The director is currently gearing up for the release of the movie King which features Abhishek Bachchan, Suhana Khan and Abhay Verma in pivotal roles. Sujoy Ghosh on dealing with the failure of Aladin
Sujoy Ghosh recalled the biggest challenge and obstacle he faced when no one wanted to back his project. In an interview with Mashable India, the director revealed that Aladin’s (2009) failure had damaged his reputation. The film featured Amitabh Bachchan and Riteish Deshmukh in the lead roles and was a massive flop at the box office. Sujoy said, “In all, 17 people must have watched Aladin, and out of that, 15 were from my own family. Either a film works, or it doesn’t. If it works, then it is a good movie. If it doesn’t, then it is a bad film. So, if it didn’t work, then probably I made a bad movie. You have to just accept it and move on.”
He then recalled getting Amitabh Bachchan on board for the project. Sujoy mentioned, “I went to him (Amitabh Bachchan) with Aladin. He agreed to do it. I have no idea why, and I didn’t want to question it either. He said yes, and that was enough. When Aladin didn’t work, I think Sir was the first person who told me you do whatever you want to, I am with you. And he did it,” Sujoy Ghosh added.
Sujoy Ghosh recalls getting no takers for Kahaani
In the same conversation, following the setback, he recalled getting turned down by all major producers when he approached the script of Kahaani. The filmmaker recalled getting feedback like, "Bakwaas script hai (It’s a terrible script),” as a pregnant woman was just running in the alleys of Kolkata, with nothing much happening. However, he recalled Amitabh Bachchan being a pivotal part of the Vidya Balan headliner.
He added, "Amit ji is everywhere in Kahaani. His song, his voice-over, and he did everything. They say that when God is busy, he sends someone. God must be busy, and sir showed up.” Sujoy Ghosh teamed up with Big B in the 2019 film Badla as well.
