Emilie Dequenne, Belgian actress, died of a rare cancer, adrenocortical carcinoma, on Sunday, March 16, confirmed family. She was 43 when she breathed her last. The actress was admitted to a hospital on the outskirts of Paris. In October 2023, the actress shared that she was suffering from cancer of the adrenal gland.
Emilie was born in 1981 and studied at the Belgium Music & Spoken Word Academy in Baudour. She joined the La Relève Theater troupe at the age of 12.
The actress made her acting debut with Rosetta (1999), which earned her the Cannes Film Festival's prestigious award for Best Actress. The film also won the Palme d'Or. Over her career she earned a string of awards for her performance in movies such as Brotherhood of the Wolf, The Girl on the Train, This Is Our Land, Not My Type and Our Children, for which she won the Un Certain Regard Award for Best Actress at the 2012 Cannes Film Festival.
She returned to the prestigious award ceremony Cannes in 2024 to mark the 25th anniversary of her winning moment and to promote Survive, the English-language disaster movie. It marked her last appearance on screen before she quit, owing to her illness.
The actress got married to actor Michel Ferracci and remained married until her death.
On Instagram, Emilie's last post was made on the occasion of Valentine's Day, February 14. She shared an adorable photo of her and her husband Michel posing together.
She captioned it as “To all those who love themselves... Who loved each other and will love each other… Bonne fête! My Valentine, how lucky I am to have you every day by my side. And how proud I am of you. Loved you love you and I will love you ... @michelferracci MY LIFE.”
