The show follows Hilary Duff's Sophie Tompkins who looks for love in New York City, along side her friend group, in the year 2022. Sex And The City fame Kim Cattrall, plays the older version of Duff's Tompkins, from 2050 who narrates to her son, the story of how she met his father. Despite the spinoff having a similar format and style of storytelling, the show could not match up to the long-standing popularity of its source sitcom, How I Met Your Mother.

Creator Craig Thomas bids farewell to How I Met Your Father

Craig Thomas, one of the creators of the show who had also helped create How I Met Your Mother, took to his X account to acknowledge How I Met Your Father's cancellation. His note read, "Thanks to the wonderful cast and crew who worked so hard on #HIMYF, and to all who checked it out, sometimes this is how it goes in this crazy business..." Besides Thomas, the show notably had Isaac Aptaker and Elizabeth Berger as creators. The duo had formerly been the showrunners for This Is Us.
