Christopher Nolan is all praises for MCU
In an interview with The New York Times, Christopher Nolan reflected on the sheer brilliance in casting achieved by Marvel. His comment came particularly with regards to Robert Downey Jr being cast as Tony Stark. Crediting Jon Favreau for the same, Nolan referred to the decision as one of the most "consequential decisions in Hollywood history".

He said, "No, the truth is, I think Jon Favreau casting Robert as Tony Stark is one of the most significant and consequential casting decisions in Hollywood history… It wound up defining our industry. Coming out of COVID, you say, 'Thank God for Marvel movies.' And it’s one of those where, in retrospect, everybody thinks it was obvious. But he took an enormous risk casting you in that role."
Christopher Nolan was 'a little afraid of' Robert Downey Jr on their first meeting
In a separate interview given to The New York Times, one which featured both Nolan and Downey Jr, the director shared how though the actor had been told he was in the running to be cast as Scarecrow in Batman Begins, deep down the filmmaker had already picked his Oppenheimer lead Cillian Murphy for the role - which is who ended up essaying the role. However, Nolan reveals he was a big admirer of Robert and had wanted to meet him. This however, came with a little side of fright, especially owing to the stories Nolan had heard about the actor.

He said, "I 100% knew you weren’t the guy (for Scarecrow). In my head that was already cast. But I always wanted to meet you…I was a huge admirer of yours and therefore selfishly just wanted to take the meeting. But I was also a little afraid of you, you know. I had heard all kinds of stories about how you were crazy. It was only a few years after the last of those stories that had come out about you."
