How Christopher Nolan Subtly Encouraged Cillian Murphy

A recent interview saw Cillian Murphy bring along his copy of the Oppenheimer script. The front cover of the same, bore some heartening words penned by a hopeful Nolan - words which could have arguably played a major motivating factor in shaping the hard-hitting performance by the actor in the atom bomb epic and now awards season favourite. Nolan's note to Murphy, penned ahead of them commencing shoot for Oppenheimer, simply read, "Dearest Cillian. Finally, a chance to see you lead… Love, Chris."

Separately, an interesting fact about the the scripts on Nolan's sets, is that the words are written on red sheets with black ink. The reason behind this striking colour combination is the security of intellectual property. The colour combination at hand prevents the script from being photocopied by prying eyes and hands.

Oppenheimer is not Cillian Murphy and Christopher Nolan's first collaboration

Coming back to Nolan's note for Murphy, the director expressing his desire to "finally" see the actor lead one of his films comes from their multiple and repeated collaborations over the years. Their professional relationship spans the better part of two decades and includes six movies. These namely include three Batman films, Inception, Dunkirk and now Oppenheimer.

Murphy too, has always wanted to lead a Nolan movie, a feat now finally achieved, and how. He had previously shared with AP how he had essentially been "desperate" to take the lead in a Nolan directorial. He said, "I have always said publicly and privately, to Chris, that if I’m available and you want me to be in a movie, I’m there. I don’t really care about the size of the part...But deep down, secretly, I was desperate to play a lead for him."
