George Foreman Demise: The legendary boxing champion and Olympic gold medallist has died at the age of 76. His family announced his passing in a heartfelt statement on Instagram. Neither his family nor officials have yet disclosed the official cause of death. For many of us, George Foreman has been a household name since the late ’90s, when he lost to Muhammad Ali in the iconic 1974 'Rumble in the Jungle' before reclaiming the title two decades later. In the light of his death, let's take a look at the legendary boxer’s connection to the entertainment industry as his documentaries reflect the greatness of his life.
There are two documentaries made on George Foreman’s life. In 2017, The Foreman was released. This documentary captures George Foreman’s remarkable comeback after losing the world heavyweight championship to Muhammad Ali in 1974. It is available to rent on Prime Video.
The second one is directed by George Tillman Jr. and stars Khris Davis, Sullivan Jones, and Forest Whitaker, with George Foreman himself serving as an executive producer. Big George Foreman tells the inspiring story of a man who rose swiftly to become an Olympic gold medallist and heavyweight boxing champion. After a crushing defeat, George leaves boxing to become a preacher, only to return two decades later and reclaim his heavyweight title. The film was released on April 28, 2023.
Since its theatrical release, the film has received much praise. Its recent debut on Netflix has attracted a wider audience, though it is not yet available in India. Additionally, the film is accessible for streaming on SonyLiv.
Foreman also made a cameo appearance as a fight announcer in The Fighter and appeared in several Muhammad Ali documentaries, including When We Were Kings, which was released in 1996.
Nicknamed Big George in the ring, the American boxer achieved an extraordinary and lasting career. He won Olympic gold in 1968 and became a two-time world heavyweight champion, with a 21-year gap between the titles. His second victory, at age 45, made him the oldest champion in history.
He retired from boxing in 1997 but secured even greater financial success by endorsing a best-selling grill, earning far more than his boxing career had ever provided. In his later years, occasional rumours about his health surfaced. In 2023, unverified reports claimed he was facing serious health problems, but these were dismissed after he appeared at a public event, looking healthy and lively. During a 2014 interview with AARP, he mentioned undergoing "about four knee operations." The cause of his death is yet to reveal.
