Priscilla, starring Cailee Spaeny and Jacob Elordi, will be debuting in theatres on November 3. Ahead of its release, the makers unveiled the trailer of the much-anticipated film on Tuesday. It gave a glimpse into the tumultuous relationship of music legend Elvis Presley and his wife Priscilla.

3 things you need to know

  • Priscilla is directed by Lost in Translation famed Sofia Coppola.
  • The film is a direct adaptation of Priscilla Presley's 1985 biographical memoir, Elvis and Me.
  • Ahead of its release,  the movie was screened at the Venice Film Festival.

Priscilla focuses on her relationship with Elvis

Priscilla's trailer features scenes from what the makers call "the unseen side of a great American myth," including the event of her first meeting with Elvis Presley. They met in Germany when Priscilla was 14 and the singer was at the age of 24. The clip also shows a glimpse of her getting married, going through a tumultuous marriage to the King of Rock 'n' Roll, as well as their eventual divorce.

The young woman's courtship brought her from the classroom to Graceland, where she finally became a fashion icon and, later, a young mother who had to deal with the hazards of fame and her husband's volatile temperaments.

Sofia Coppola's vision for Priscilla

In an interview with FT, Sofia revealed her primary objective is cinematising Elvis and Me in a manner that spotlights Priscilla and not the King of Rock and Roll. Coppola recalled how though she had read the memoir earlier on in her life, revisiting it inspired her to explore the novel on-screen in a manner that centre-lined the theme of growing into womanhood, especially under the wing of an overarching husband.

Priscilla comes after the box-office success of director Baz Luhrmann’s Elvis movie last year, which starred Austin Butler as the iconic musician and Olivia DeJonge as Priscilla in a story that also focused on Tom Hanks as manager Tom Parker. Members of the Presley family praised that film upon its release last summer.
