New Delhi: Bollywood actor John Abraham has said that he loves diplomacy, loves watching India's External Affairs Minister (EAM) Dr S Jaishankar talking as he’s the poster boy of India. John made these remarks in an exclusive conversation with Republic Media Network's Editor-in-Chief Arnab Goswami as he shared interesting insights about his upcoming film ‘The Diplomat’, which is based on a true event.

John’s upcoming film The Diplomat is based on a real life story of how an Indian Muslim girl falls in love with a Pakistani man in Malaysia who is taken to the country on the pretext of love. But then there is an attempt to take her to Khyber Pakhtunkhwa to sell her off to jihadis. The catch in this film is how the Indian government brings her back home.

John Abraham, who plays the role of an Indian Diplomat JP Singh in the movie, revealed how he ended up doing the film.

Speaking to Arnab, John said, “Honestly, I read the script, it was lying on my table… read it one morning, expecting to drop it at one point of time because our scripts… we don’t concentrate on the content and get disappointed from what we read. But it (the script) was reading well, it read well and by the end of it I was blown. I called up the gentlemen who sent me the script and told him that I want to make this film happen.”

S Jaishankar changed the face of Indian diplomacy, says John Abraham

Drawing from his character as he plays the role of a diplomat, John Abraham said, “I love diplomacy, love watching EAM Dr S Jaishankar talking, wherever he talks, he’s the poster boy of India. We all are light up, so I read it (the script), liked it and that’s the reason why I did it…”

When asked by Arnab as to what John's endgame would be like, the actor humorously and respectfully replied “to take over from S Jaishankar.”

John told Arnab that Union Minister Dr S Jaishankar has seen the trailer and loved it. He's going to meet him which would be like a fan boy moment. He's so excited to see him as he genuinely respects EAM who has changed the face of the Indian diplomacy in this country.

As the two discussed more about the film's subject, Arnab asked John Abraham what did the diplomat do in this film.

The actor without revealing much about the movie said that his role revolves around how he (Diplomat) helped the girl to bring her back home with the help of the then Foreign Minister Sushma Swaraj, something that was practically impossible because the girl was married to a Pakistani.

John said that the audience will miss Sushma Swaraj after watching his film The Diplomat.

Discussing diplomacy and geopolitics, John Abraham also mocked Pakistan saying that diplomacy works in every country but in the case of Islamabad, it’s ice-skating.

Indian diplomat JP Singh sat with director, contextualised everything, says John

Revealing more insights from the making of the movie, John Abraham told Arnab how Indian diplomat JP Singh sat with his director and contextualised everything as the script was being worked. John also mentioned about how JP Singh was trying to understand what was going on his mind during their meeting adding he's a super intelligent and a smart person.
