Ever since Malayalam film Marco premiered on OTT last month, it has come under fire for showcasing extreme violence. Those who watched it, gave their views and one of them is the renowned director VC Abhilash. He also questioned the sanity of individuals as how one could watch the movie.

Director VC Abhilash on Marco: This product is a dark chapter….

Filmmaker VC Abhilash took to his Facebook handle and penned a lengthy note about Marco. He wrote, “'Marco' was seen only till the break time in the theater. "There is no violence like this one is saying" yesterday, I was about to see the rest of the day. There is a request that the people who made this anti-social creation and those who praised it should examine their mental status. 'Why are you ready to see this? 'Didn't he succeed in theatres? Beyond the questions ', this product is a dark chapter in the history of Indian cinema and a great social crime for the audience in me. I have never seen such a devilish/inhuman expression in any Korean movie..! The head of a little boy I had to see how the paste is turned into a rough paste using gas cylinder..! I also had to see a foetus crying from inside the stomach of a pregnant woman..! Even if it is argued that these are common in this society, the only result Marco produces is sadism.”

He further wrote , “The filmmaker and the audience in me do not have an argument that cinema should only be a re-production of purity. I like crime-thriller movies too, dream. But due to creations like Marco, the sensor board's 'interference' will be higher than it is now. There will be a situation where even the natural crime scenes in the story of movies will be questioned tomorrow. Now after a long time…Those who created this would have come to any interview with guilt and say 'shouldn't have'. By then, this poisonous offspring labeled as Art would have given energy to the baseless interpretation that cinema is the cause of all the bad things in the land!”.

“That's right, we also have movies that promote western slasher/brutality at our fingertips today. Our art is not to follow it just because it is. If a movie that supports pedophilia is taken tomorrow, will we be able to interpret it as art and give permission to show? The general society and the film fraternity as a whole. This poisonous snake should be repelled. Note: This is the first time since becoming a filmmaker that I am saying something negative about something that came out under the name of 'cinema'. Confirming that 'there is no violence like this one says', the friend who inspired me to watch the second half has also openly admitted today that he had only seen this 'item' till the first half!”, the director concluded.
