#MeToo In Mollywood: The shocking revelations from the Hema Committee Report have shaken the Malayalam film industry. Several cases of sexual harassment faced by women at the hands of their colleagues have been registered, leading to outcry. Many celebrities across industries have come forward and demanded strict action against the culprits. Samantha Ruth Prabhu supported WCC (Women in Cinema Collective) and lauded the body for stepping up to help women voice their concerns.

Samantha Ruth Prabhu, who always voices out her opinion on several issues, recently took to Instagram to shower praise on the women's body. She wrote, “For years, I’ve followed the incredible work of the Women in Cinema Collective (WCC) in Kerala. Their journey has been anything but easy. Now, as the serious implications of the Hema Committee Report come to light, we owe a debt of gratitude to WCC. A safe and respectful workplace should be the bare minimum, yet many have to battle for it.”

She further said, “But their efforts have not been in vain. I hope this marks just the beginning of a much-needed transformation. My love and respect go out to my friends and sisters in WCC."

What is WCC?

Women in Cinema Collective Foundation was registered as a society. In the first two years, Women in Cinema Collective maintained a special focus on dealing with sexual harassment within the industry.

Women in Cinema Collective aims to build a safe, non-discriminatory and professional workspace for women in cinema through advocacy and policy change. The committee encourages women to be a part of the industry through outreach initiatives for craft enrichment opportunities, industry support and mentorship opportunities for its members.

WCC’s connection to Hema Committee Report

After the incident in 2017, in which an actress faced sexual assault in Kochi, the committee met and submitted a written appeal to the Chief Minster, Government of Kerala to address the situation with urgency and effectiveness.

In 2017, the Government of Kerala constituted the Justice K Hema Committee Report in which veteran actress Sharad and retied IAS officer KV Valsalakumari are also members to study the status of women in the Malayalam film industry.
