Mohanlal's Sabrimala Puja Controversy: The L2 Empuraan actor is receiving a heavy backlash from the Hindu population after he conducted Usha Puja at Sabarimala for Mollywood stalwart Mammootty. Angry fans are slamming the actor for hurting the religious sentiments of Hindus by performing a puja for his Muslim friend. A section of Muslims asked if Mammootty knew about the puja, as it is against Islamic belief. For the unversed, Mammootty's original name is Muhammad Kutty Panaparambil Ismail.

The row began on March 18, when Mohanlal visited Sabarimala. Following his visit, a receipt of puja offering went viral that reads the birth name of Mammootty and his birth year, "Visakham". The receipt was offered by the Devaswom Office, hinting that Mohanlal performed a Usha puja for Mammootty. This also hinted at the veteran actor battling cancer, which was later dismissed by his team, calling it "fake news".

For the unversed, Usha Puja is referred to as the morning puja performed after the temple opens around 7:30 AM. It is one of the sacred puja's at Sabrimala.

Netizens slam Mohanlal and Mammootty for hurting religious sentiments

Soon after the receipt leaked online, netizens rose in uproar, calling this practice wrong, but a section of the internet hailed Mohanlal's action, calling the act an example of communal harmony. O Abdhullah, the former editor of a newspaper and an influencer, shared an audio message asking Mammootty to apologise. “If it was with Mammootty’s knowledge, he should seek forgiveness. He should apologise to the Muslim community. It was a serious lapse on the side of the actor. There is nothing wrong if Mohanlal had performed the offering without Mammootty’s knowledge. Mohanlal’s faith in Lord Ayyappa must be that high. He may have done it based on that faith. However, if the offering was performed with Mammootty’s directive, then it is a great crime. According to Islamic beliefs, no one should offer anything to anyone except Allah," he said.

Mohanlal breaks the silence on being slammed for performing puja in the name of Mammootty

Addressing the ongoing controversy, Mohanlal stated that Mammootty is like a brother to him, and since he was not keeping well, he decided to perform a puja for his well-being. “What’s wrong in praying for him? He is doing well. He had a minor health issue, but that’s normal for everyone. There is nothing to worry about." He called this act a "deeply" personal matter.

However, this is not the first time Mohanlal performed a puja for Mammootty and his family. In a recent interview with a portal, Prithviraj addressed Mohanlal's ongoing controversy and said that Mohanlal and Mammooty had done this in past, but this time, it made the news.
