Tamil Nadu CM Joseph Vijay’s Wife Sangeetha Withdraws Divorce Petition, Case Officially Closed

Tamil Nadu: In a major development, Sangeetha, the wife of actor and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay, withdrew her divorce case against him on Friday, effectively ending the legal procedures before the Chengalpattu Family Court.

The family court formally closed the divorce case once the petition was withdrawn. Sangeetha appeared in court via video conference and advised Judge Sujatha of her decision to withdraw the petition. After interviewing her for around 15 minutes, the judge granted the request and formally ended the case.

Divorce Petition Alleged Infidelity and Emotional Cruelty

Sangeetha filed the divorce suit in February 2026, stating that Vijay had a "adulterous relationship" with an actress. In her petition, she stated that she became aware of the alleged relationship in April 2021, and that it caused her emotional pain, mental suffering, and constituted a breach of marriage trust.

She further claimed that Vijay prolonged his relationship with the actress, causing her great anguish and disgrace to their children. The petition also claimed that Vijay had emotionally distanced himself from her since 2021, and that she had faced verbal abuse and “constructive desertion.”

The court processes began on February 26 and were eventually postponed till April 20, only three days before the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections. During the election campaign, the case received political as well as legal attention.

Case Coincided With Election Affidavit Row

The withdrawal also comes amid a lawsuit before the Madras High Court requesting an investigation into Vijay's election affidavit, in which he disclosed loan Rs 12.60 crore to Sangeetha. Venkatesh, a voter from the Perambur seat, filed the petition, which questioned the disclosure in light of the ongoing divorce proceedings and expressed concern about Vijay's declaration of Rs 20 crore to a private educational trust.

The Madras High Court dismissed the appeal at the end of April, citing that a similar petition seeking the same relief had already been denied.

Vijay and Sangeetha initially met in 1996. Sangeetha, a Sri Lankan raised in Britain, and Vijay formalized their marriage in the United Kingdom in 1998 before marrying according to Hindu traditions in Chennai on August 25, 1999, nearly 27 years. They have two children, a son, Jason, and a daughter, Dhivya.
