Lakshmi Manchu, actress, producer and television presenter, is known for her appearances in South Indian movies such as Kadal, Anaganaga O Dheerudu, Lakshmi Bomb and more. She is the daughter of veteran actor Mohan Babu, but neither she took his help nor did he come forward to support her career. The actress, in a recent interview, revealed that she is a victim of patriarchy in South cinema and that her father "roadblocked" her career when she wanted to move to Mumbai from Hyderabad for better opportunities.
In an interview with The Free Press Journal, the actress was asked about the roadblocks in moving to Mumbai from Hyderabad. The actress replied her family didn't let her move for the longest time. They had their qualms, so she started living with her best friend and actress Rakul Preet Singh's house. "I was chatting with Rana Daggubati, and he told me that I couldn’t stay in Hyderabad forever. I couldn’t sleep for three nights. Men down South aren’t okay with heroes' sisters or daughters being actresses," she continued. Lakshmi added that men down in the south step back from casting women belonging to the fraternity world.
When asked about her thoughts on the patriarchal system in the film industry, the actress revealed that she is a victim of patriarchy. She used to fight for the things that her brothers got easily. "We are a patriarchal society, we have to call it out rather identifying it. It is not only in South industry but also exists in all parts of the country," she added.
Having started her career at the age of 4, Lakshmi has so far appeared in 20 movies in India and had minor television roles in the U.S. Apart from being an actress, she is also a co-owner of Sree Lakshmi Prasanna Pictures, a production company that has produced fifty-six feature films to date.
