Vijay Deverakonda, Rana Daggubati And Other 23 Tollywood Celebs Booked For Promoting Betting Apps: Report

A case has been registered against 25 Tollywood celebrities and influencers, including Rana Daggubati, Prakash Raj, Vijay Devarakonda, Manchu Lakshmi, and Nidhi Agarwal for alleged involvement in promoting online betting applications. The case has been registered by Miyapur PS in Cyberabad Commiserate. They have been booked under 318(4),112,r/w 49 BNS,3,3(A),4 TSGA,66-D ITA. The FIR was reportedly registered based on a petition filed by Phanindra Sarma, a 32-year-old businessman wherein he claimed that several celebs and influencers encouraged people to invest in illegal betting apps through social media pop-up ads.

This has come after Panjagutta Police filed cases against 11 actors and influencers, including Vishnu Priya, Sudheer, Harsha Sai, Imran Khan and Kiran Goud on charges of allegedly promoting betting apps.

What else do we know about the case?

According to the FIR, the complaint stated “It has come to his knowledge that people are actively engaging in such apps and most of them have already lost their hard-earned money into it. Even though he has been influenced by such betting applications, and was about to deposit in one such betting/gambling/casino website, due to his family’s word of caution, he did not do so. While using his social media applications, especially Instagram and Facebook, he came across several celebrities and influencers, who actively promoted several illegal betting apps, websites and other platforms that needed to be downloaded on mobile phones and used for betting and gambling."

Influencers and celebrities are promoting these apps and websites by accepting huge sums of money as commission and remuneration. These platforms are encouraging the public, especially people who are in dire need of money, to invest their hard-earned and family money into those apps/websites and slowly get addicted to them, leading to total financial collapse, FIR stated.

The Hyderabad police are busy cracking down on cases of illegal betting apps and have intensified their efforts against the promotions of such apps.
