Filmmaker Mohan Raja announced Thani Oruvan 2, the sequel to the 2015 movie of the same name, on Monday evening. Mohan, who had last directed the Chiranjeevi starrer Godfather, shared the promo for the sequel. Thani Oruvan 2 will mark the return of Jayam Ravi and Nayanthara in the lead roles.

Sequel promo shows actor-director duo in a tense interaction
August 28 marked 8 years of Thani Oruvan, the 2015 runaway hit starring Jayam Ravi and Nayanthara. Celebrating the anniversary of his film, director Mohan Raja announced the sequel to Thani Oruvan on Monday evening by sharing a teaser of the film. The promo featured the actor-director duo in a tense virtual interaction where the filmmaker interacts with his protagonist, telling him why and how he needs to return.
Jayam Ravi shared the sequel’s poster on his social media page, with the caption, “Unveiling the epic return! Get ready for the next chapter of adventure & intrigue as we proudly announce the arrival of #Mithran in #ThaniOruvan2. Brace yourselves for another thrilling ride into the world of Mohan Raja.” Jayam Ravi had played Mithran, an IPS officer in the original movie.
Thani Oruvan was a successful action-thriller. Made on a budget of Rs 15 crore, the film earned Rs 105 crores at the box office. Thani Oruvan was eventually remade in Bengali as Dhruva, and in Telugu as One. In 2019, the makers announced that there would be a sequel to the film, but the production was put on hold because of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Jayam Ravi completes 20 years in industry
This year also marks 20 years of Jayam Ravi’s acting career as a lead. The Ponniyin Selvan actor made his debut as a hero in the 2003 film Jayam. Meanwhile, Mohan Raja’s last directorial Godfather, starring Megastar Chiranjeevi was a commercial failure. Mohan Raja and Jayam Ravi are brothers.
Jayam Ravi was last seen in Ponniyin Selvan 2, while Nayanthara is gearing up for her Hindi film debut Jawan, directed by Atlee.
