Mohanlal starrer L2 Empuraan and Vikram's Veera Dheera Sooran Part 2 clashed at the box office on March 27. Both action thrillers were the highest anticipated movies of the year. While Empuraan earned mixed reviews from the critics, Veera Dheera Sooran 2 was widely hailed by the audience. However, it couldn't manage to leave a mark on the opening day as it got embroiled in a controversy, which led to its release in the evening.
According to Sacnilk, the movie earned ₹3.25 crore at the box office on the opening day. Veera Dheera Sooran had an overall 22.91 per cent Tamil occupancy on Thursday, with the maximum reported in Dindigul (36.50 per cent). Upon its release, the movie became embroiled in legal trouble after B4U filed a complaint against the producer HR Pictures in the Delhi High Court over OTT rights. The ban was lifted after the production house was asked to deposit ₹7 crore as security.
This effected the sales of the film, dropping the opening day collection for Vikram.
The Mohanlal and Prithviraj Sukumaran starrer performed well at the box office despite earning mixed reviews. However, couldn't manage to leave a mark at Telugu box office despite getting a half-day solo window due to ban on Veera Dheera Sooran release. The movie could only earn ₹1.2 crore in the Telugu language, while it earned the maximum in Malayalam, ₹19.45 crore. Adding all the languages collection, the movie ₹22 crore at the box office in India. L2: Empuraan had an overall 61.02 per cent Malayalam occupancy on Thursday, with the maximum reported in Kochi (97.50 per cent).
The real test will be their second day at the box office as it will give them equal time in the theatres.
