Alpha-Gal Syndrome: Two women, aged 45 and 61, from Washington, USA, have recently been diagnosed with a rare illness exhibiting symptoms like vomiting, diarrhoea, life-threatening allergic reactions, and difficulty breathing. 

As per reports, the duo was bitten by ticks, though scientists suspect other species may be involved. The report also states that blood tests confirmed the rare tick-borne illness, Alpha-Gal Syndrome (AGS).

What is Alpha-Gal Syndrome?

Alpha-Gal Syndrome (AGS), also known as red meat allergy or tick bite allergy, is a potentially life-threatening condition caused by a tick bite. An individual with AGS reacts to red meat products or other products made from mammals.

The National Institute of Health (NIH) explains, “Alpha-gal syndrome is an unconventional food allergy, characterized by IgE-mediated hypersensitivity responses to the glycan galactose-alpha-1,3-galactose (alpha-gal) and not to a food-protein."

What are the symptoms of Alpha-Gal Syndrome?

Here are some of the common symptoms of Alpha-Gal Syndrome outlined by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC):

• Hives or itchy rash
• Nausea or vomiting
• Severe stomach pain
• Heartburn or indigestion
• Diarrhea
• Cough, shortness of breath, or difficulty breathing
• Drop in blood pressure
• Swelling of the lips, throat, tongue, or eyelids
• Dizziness or faintness

How Dangerous Is Alpha-Gal Syndrome?

As per the CDC, this tick-borne illness typically shows symptoms 2-6 hours after consuming meat, and dairy products, or even after exposure to a product containing alpha-gal.
