Boman Kohinoor, co-owner of Mumbai's Britannia & Co passes away at 97

Boman Rashid Kohinoor, senior partner of Mumbai’s famous eatery Britannia & Co Restaurant, passed away at the age of 97 on September 25, 2019 at the Parsee General Hospital in the city. Boman Kohinoor was the man behind the legendary Parsi restaurant in South Mumbai’s Ballard Estate area. The restaurant was started by his father in 1923. After his father passed away, Boman Kohinoor took the responsibility of running the Britannia & Co Restaurant at a very young age.

His presence around the restaurant made diners comfortable as he made sure people leave with their stomachs full of the delicious dishes the restaurant has to offer. In an exclusive interview, Boman Kohinoor had shared that his father opened the Britannia & Co in the same year when he was born.

Boman Kohinoor had shared that during his father's tenure time till Independence, Britannia & Co was visited by English and American customers. He had stated that during that time his father used to serve them continental food and a few Indian dishes. Boman Kohinoor stated that when took over the restaurant, he slowly introduced Indian dishes to the menu, along with the help of his wife. 

"After Independence, I took over and slowly introduced Indian side by side. So this went till 1982. My wife, who was a lawyer, was also a good cook. She introduced the specials that we have on the menu right now like Berry Pulao, Salli Botti etc. My wife is no more but we are going on with the same menu since 1982," he had said.

Speaking about the one-of-its-kind name of the restaurant - Britannian and Co, he had revealed, "It was British time when my father started this restaurant and he needed a license from the Municipal Corporation then. At that point of time, the Municipal Corporation officer was an English man and he wanted an English name. My father thought to give this name Britannia for registration so the officer gives him the permission to open the restaurant otherwise he would have delayed it by two-three months or so."

Britannia & Co is currently managed by Boman Kohinoor's son.
